As the world moves towards a more environmentally friendly future e-bikes (or officially Electrically Assisted Pedal Cycles) are legal to ride anywhere you can ride a conventional bicycle in England, Scotland and Wales. You need to be over 14 years of age, have pedals to propel your e-bike, an electric motor that won’t assist you beyond 15.5 mph and a battery pack not exceeding 250w of power. This is not the case in Northern Ireland where different rules and regulations apply.

You can make great savings buying through the cycle to work scheme and it’s a no brainier as it doesn’t need to be registered, taxed or insured so a great money saver compared to your average scooter or moped and it keeps you fit without struggling with those hills!! There is of course an exception to the rule, if you decide to go for one of the faster S-pedelec bikes with speeds of up to 28mph then in the eyes of the government it’s a moped and can’t be ridden in cycle lanes. You will also need a driving licence, number plate, insurance and tax, so these need to be taken into consideration before deciding.

If your bike is classed as a motor vehicle, you’ll need to apply for vehicle approval from either the manufacturer or importer and ensure that your driving licence is valid for the class of vehicle.
